10 Fun Fitness Activities to Suggest When Kids Say, "I'm Bored!"

Do the words "I'm bored" sound all too familiar?

As a parent, you've probably heard this complaint from your kids all too often. Next time, take those words as a challenge to get your kids moving … and for you to get moving right along with them!

You don't have to buy expensive equipment or join a fancy gym for your kids to have fun while getting fit. Check out the 10 fun fitness ideas below. You'll find family activities, things kids can do by themselves and, believe it or not, even a couple of ways to make household chores fun for kids. Soon, they'll be bored no more!

Sporty Activities for You and Your Kids to Do Together

    Take a hike to enjoy the great outdoors. Explore a new park in your town or just "hike" around the block together. Everyone will get some exercise and your kids will feel good that you spent time with them.

    Splash around at the community pool or run through the sprinkler in your own backyard.

    Kick around a soccer ball or practice fielding ground balls. You'll help improve your kids' skills and coordination. Or maybe they'll help you improve yours!

    Play catch with a Frisbee® disc, softball or football. If it's a hot day, toss around a water balloon!

    Hit the basketball court for a game of "H-O-R-S-E." Two or more people can play this simple game. Here's how to play:

  1. The first player chooses a spot on the court to make a shot.
  2. If the first player does not make the shot, the second player can take a shot from anywhere on the court.
  3. If the first player does makes the shot, the second player must try the shot from the same position on the court.
  4. If the second player makes it, the third person must try the shot from the same position on the court.
  5. But, if the second player doesn't make the shot, he gets an "H" and the third player can make a shot from anywhere on the court.
  6. The goal is not to get "out" by spelling the word "HORSE."
  7. The last person left on the court wins.

Fun Things for One Kid

  1. Suggest that your child check out the "Wet Head" games here at (games that make their head "wet" or sweaty!). 
  2. Encourage your child to try some of's "Time Challenge" games. Challenges include activities to get kids moving indoors. They can play on their own or with a buddy. Once they've played for a while, ask them how they did.

  3. Look into exercise videos created especially for kids. Some children, girls in particular, love the dance moves of these videos. Most libraries offer a selection of exercise videos, so your child can try before you buy.

    Make Household Chores Fun

    1. Clean the house together, but make it a blast! Put on some of their favorite high-energy music, then "race" to see who can finish their chores first.

    2. When possible, assign them the active chores they like best. For example, some kids think mopping the floor is fun, but dusting is a bore. Bonus for you: When kids like their "assignment," they'll probably do a more thorough job, too.
